Sump Pump Installation
/If you have a basement or crawlspace that is constantly experiencing problems with moisture or flooding, you know how frustrating it can be. Wet and leaky basements can cause all sorts of problems ranging from mold to structural damage. For homeowners in St. Catharines or the Niagara area, one of the simplest solutions to controlling moisture is by installing a sump pump.
What is a sump pump?
A sump pump is a device that diverts water away from your home. It works in combination with a sump pit which draws in water from your home’s waterproofing system. The water is then pumped away via the sump pump – usually into a storm drain or dry well. The sump pump works automatically and will come on once the water in the sump pit reaches a certain level.
Who can install a sump pump?
If you simply need an older sump pump replaced, this can be done by either a plumber or a waterproofing specialist. If, however, you require a complete sump system to be installed in your Niagara home, this job should be done by basement specialists, such as ourselves, as it requires specialized knowledge and equipment.
What are the steps involved in sump pump installation?
If you are having a complete sump system installed in your home in St. Catharines or Niagara, there are several steps that must be taken. The following is a brief overview of what you can expect.
1. Create a drainage channel and sump pit.
The first step is to create an area that will capture groundwater so that it can be transported to your sump pump. A jackhammer is used to create a sump pit and a drainage channel below the floor level.
2. Install a drainage pipe.
The next step is to install a drainage pipe. This pipe is sloped slightly downward so that water will flow into the sump pit which is lined with durable plastic.
3. Install the sump pump.
After the sump pit has been dug and lined, the sump pump is then installed.
4. Patch the floor.
Once the sump pump is installed, we then patch them using mortar. This covers the drain tile along the edge of the basement floor, as well as the edge of the sump liner.
5. Connect to power.
It is recommended that the sump pump have its own dedicated circuit. Usually this is done by placing a CFCI-protected receptacle on the wall which is closest to the sump pump.
6. Install exterior drain line.
The final step is to drill a hole into the basement rim joist and install a plastic drain line that extends to the exterior of the home. This line is then connected to the outlet port of the sump pump and a check valve is installed in this line to ensure that water does not flow back through the line after it has been pumped out.
